Suwen wins a triple at Victoria Monthly Golf Championship

Versatile lady golfer Suwen Selvaratnam won a triple while expatriate Mark Chicano walked away with major honours at the Etisalat sponsored Victoria Monthly Championship organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and worked off at the Victoria golf course at Rajawella off Kandy on Saturday.

A very large field of golfers teed off and a good number of Etisal Elite customers invading the course with many prizes on offer. Though the expected rains did not come during the week the course was in topping conditions with the beautifully laid fairways and the golfers enjoyed it all.

The presentation of awards took place at the Club house in the afternoon with the General Manager of VGCR, Ms Danushika Medagoda (Marketing Manager VGCR), Chairman Telepix Limited Nimal Peiris, Operations Manager Etisalat Udeni Rambukwella, Regional Manager, Regional Operations Dinusha Karandawatte doing the honours.

Suwen Selvaratnam was the star of the golf championship as she carried away no less than three main awards which underlined her dominance of the events for the ladies.

She first won the gross championship for ladies with a score of 85 though Niloo Jayatillake was ahead of her with a total of 82. Niloo Jayatillake was awarded the Nett Championship in keeping with the rules only one award in the main championship. The others to register good scores Manori Jayakoddy 93 gross, Linda Harris 105 and Shirani Buffin 106 and Pauline equalling with a gross 106, on a course which offered stiff resistance. Suwen Selvaratnam next won the longest drive for the Ladies with a mighty swipe and also the Dearest to the Pin.

Another versatile golfer Niloo Jayatillake playing to the 8 she registered a Net score of 74 which is excellent under the prevailing conditions.

Mora Magadelena playing to a handicap of 33 equalled this total but Niloo Jayatillake edged her cut her on a count back on the last nine holes, getting 9:36 against 9:38 by her opponent. Manori Jayakoddy once again finished third with a Net score of 75 playing to a handicap of 18 and this was equalled by Suwen Selvaratnam who played to a handicap of 10. On a count back on the last nine holes Manori Jayakoddy was ahead getting 9:36 and Suwen Selvaratnam 9:39.

The gross championship for men was lifted by David Evans with a gross of 76 followed by Sujeewa Lankatillake 80. Mark Chicano 93, Sanjeewa Wickremanayake finished fourth with 84 after a count back on the last nine holes getting 9:47, but Kandy Sports Club's rugby coach Johan Taylor was ahead of him with a Net 84 and a count back of 9:45.

Mens Division One Net Winner: Sunil Jayakoddy

Ladies Net winner: Niloo Jayatillake

Mens Net winner: Mark Chicano

Mens Gross winner: David Evans

Overall Net winner: Mark Chicano
