Gankanda released on bail
UNP Ratnapura district MP Dunesh Gankanda, who
surrendered to the Kollupitiya Police over an alleged assault
incident, was released on bail after being produced in the Colombo
Fort Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Fort Chief Magistrate Kanishka
Wijeratne released the Parliamentarian on cash bail of Rs 30,000 and
two surety bails of Rs 100,000 each. He was also ordered to appear
at the Kollupitiya Police on the last Sunday of every month.

Police arrest asylum seeking Lankans
Police yesterday busted a massive human
smuggling racket with the arrest of 113 persons who were about to
set sail for Australia from locations in Negombo and Galle Face. The
group preparing to depart to Australia as asylum seekers along with
their agents, were nabbed by the Colombo Fraud Bureau when they were
about to be taken to an unknown place in Negombo.

‘Police responsibilities increased after war’
The number of challenges and responsibilities of
the police have increased with the eradication of terrorism which
prevailed in the country over the past three decades. Therefore, all
police personnel should carry out their duties in a respective
manner, Defence and Urban Development Ministry Additional Secretary
Damayanthi Jayarathne said.
