Electricity for 150 families

A new electricity scheme was inaugurated at Madawela Ulpotha in
Matale by the Ceylon Electricity Board on the request of Deputy
Transport Minister Rohana Kumara Dissanayaka.
Rs 600,000 was spent for the scheme and over 150 families benefited.
Poson in Neluwa
The Neluwa Divisional Secretariat will celebrate the Poson week by
holding a sil campaign and a meditation programme on June 1.
Poson Perahera
The annual poson perahera of Godapitiya Jethawana Raja Maha Viharaya,
Akuressa will be held on June 4.
The perahera will leave at 2.30 pm from the vihara premises.
Land shrinks as erosion continues

The coastline from Paiyagala to Aluthgama has been subjected to
severe sea erosion with the onset of the South West moonsoon. Residents
along the coastal belt said this has threatened the small coconut
plantations owned by them. Although authorities are dumping metal along
the beach to protect the land area from strong sea waves, it has not
helped to prevent sea erosion since the exercise had been done in a
haphazard and irresponsible manner.
Moves to curb dengue

Two awareness programmes on dengue, malaria, brain fever and
chikungunya will be conducted for schoolchildren in the Sainthamaruthu
Divisional Secretariat area.
Saintamaruthu Al Ameen Sri Lanka Organisation will hold awareness
programmes. Meanwhile, school principals have begun a programme to clean
school gardens with the assistance of parents by organising Shramadana
campaigns during weekends.
Fire in Nilgala Forest Reserve

A fire that broke out in the Nilgala Forest Reserve destroyed around
five acres of forest yesterday.
The Bibile Police said the cause behind the fire was yet to be
ascertained and it had spread rapidly due to the strong winds.
Residents and forest range officials managed to douse the fire.
The Nilgala Forest Reserve which is about 12,000 hectares in extent
is rich in bio-diversity and is considered as the only natural forest
reserve of medicinal herbs in Asia.
Man made fires and bush fires cause extensive damage to fauna and
flora and water resources in the forest reserve.
Unscrupulous individuals set fire to the forest reserve for pleasure
while poachers do so to track down animals.
Danselas under scrutiny

A 15 member team from the Anuradhapura Regional Health Services
office led by foods and drugs inspector Ananda Weragoda will inspect all
hotels, restaurants and danselas in Anuradhapura and Mihintale during
the Poson festival season to ensure that they sell hygenically prepared
food items and beverages to devotees visiting the areas for religious
observances.
Weragoda said eateries and danselas providing hygienic food items
will be issued a special sticker to be displayed prominently for the
benefit of the people visiting them.
Book launch
A book on Sri Lanka’s historical heritage (Sri Lankawe Purana Urumaya)
authored by former Archaeological Department Assistant Director and
former Media Consultant to the Central Cultural Fund Sirisaman
Wijethunga will be launched at the Kurunegala Municipal Council
auditorium on June 8 at 9.30 a.m. North Western Province Governor Tissa
R. Balalla will be the chief guest.
