“The government will not allow any extremist party or student
activists to control universities. It is our hope to mould university
students as future leaders of society. Endeavours to enhance the
academic value of the university network have proved productive. Sri
Lankan universities which were cornered without due recognition, are
reaching the top” Higher Education Minister S. B. Dissanayake said.

Higher educational reforms are taking place to enable graduates to
secure jobs irrespective of the nature of the degree, he said
The Minister was addressing a gathering of academic and non-academic
staff, undergraduates and parents at the Uva Wellassa University
premises following the inauguration of the University’s three-day
tourism educational exhibition and trade fair organized by the
hospitality, tourism and event management degree programme on Friday.
Minister S. B. Dissanayake and Foreign Employment Promotion and
Welfare Minister Dilan Perera were chief guests at the event.
The Higher Education Minister said the government is planning to
enhance academic and non-academic facilities and physical resources of
universities and encourage the establishment of private universities to
attract more foreign students. It would hoist the goodwill of the
institutions and benefit Sri Lankan students, apart from gaining foreign
exchange, the minister said.
“The government will not allow any discrimination or harm to A-L
students seeking university entrance or higher education. Private
universities will not be opened carelessly or at the whim of investors.
The country will be converted into a hub of higher education in Asia.
Needy students scoring high at the A-L will be offered scholarships to
private universities on the basis of 20 percent of the annual intake of
students,” the Higher Education Minister said. |
