Maris Stella soccer champions

Maris Stella College, Negombo emerged champions in the Holcim under-17 Inter-Schools Football Tournament when they defeated Hewavitharana Vidyalaya 2-0 in the final played at Vernon Fernando Stadium, Kalutara last Sunday.

Ashen Jeewantha and Samitha Subasinghe scored for the winners while K L Nuwan Madushanka scored the only goal for Hewavitharana Vidyalaya.

In the semi finals Maristella overcame Dharmadutha MV by 1-0 and Hewavitharana Vidyalaya had the better of Holy Cross College by 2-0.

Holy Cross College defeated Dharmadutha MV by 1-0 to take the third place.

The tournament was played in two rounds with the participation of 276 schools in 30 centres.

The soccer teams from Jaffna, Mannar, Ampar and Trincomalee showed good football skills during the tournament. The final round was played between 21 schools where they played 35 matches at Vernan Fernando Stadium and Holy Corss College, Kalutara.

Trophies, awards and medals were given away by the chief guest Mayor of Kalutara M.M.M.Jaufer.
