Sailor turns chain snatcher

A sailor attached to Tissa Naval Camp, Trincomalee has been arrested in connection with a series of gold chain snatching incidents in the area.

Police launched an investigation following a complaint by a woman that her chain was snatched on Sunday night by a person on a motorcycle while she was walking along College Road, Trincomalee. After obtaining the registration number of the motorcycle, police identified the suspect as a resident of Horowpathana and a Navy personnel attached to Tissa naval camp.

The suspect was handed over to the Police by Naval officers. Investigations revealed the suspect was directly involved in five robberies where gold chains and money were robbed from pedestrians at night in the Trincomalee town.

Police also seized the motorcycle, Rs 8,000 and five mobile phones from his possession.

The suspect is being questioned. Trincomalee police are investigating.
