Police inaction tops public complaints to NPC

Complaints of police inaction (33 per cent) in probing registered
cases, tops the list of grievances received by authorities in 2008
against the Police, according to an analysis carried out by the newly
appointed National Police Commission.
According to data analyzed by the NPC, authorities had received 1,380
public complaints against the Police in 2008.
The majority of the cases falls into the category of Police inaction
(33 percent) with misuse of power (23 per cent) and partiality (13 per
cent) being next in line.
Assault (seven per cent) and unlawful arrest and detention (six per
cent) come next.
According to NCP Secretary D. M. K. B Tennekoon, the same trend
prevails when analyzing the public complaints received against the
Police by his Commission so far. Since February 23 the NCP had received
224 complaints against the Police. They have so far categorized 129 for
investigations.
