CSD personnel shoots himself

A Civil Security Department personnel committed suicide by shooting himself while on duty at the Mahaoya Police Station, where he had been deployed for duty yesterday morning around 1.30 am.

Police media said the victim, a resident of Mahaoya, had been a father of two. Mahaoya police had commenced investigations into the incident, under the directions of Ampara Division SP, Premalal Ranagala. The Dehiattakandiya Magistrate was to carry out magisterial investigations.


Woman stabbed to death

An elderly woman of 84 was stabbed to death with a sharp object at her home in Wellampitiya on Tuesday.

Wellampitiya Police have detailed a search operation to arrest the suspects.

Police said the deceased, A D Lily Wickramasinghe of Kollonnawa, Wellampitiya, had led a solitary life at the said address when she was murdered.


Bogus doctor arrested

An Indian national had been arrested while posing as an ayurvedic doctor and carrying on medical practices while residing in a hotel in Bambalapitiya. Wellawatte police had raided the hotel on Tuesday and taken the Indian national into custody along with some herbs in his possession.

The Wellawatte Police are conducting further investigations.


Labourer dies of earthslip

A labourer was killed and another seriously injured when a mass of earth had collapsed on them in Alawathugoda on Tuesday.

Police said that the two workers were digging a foundation on a private land in Kurudugoda, when a mass of earth had slipped on them.

They had been rushed to the Akurana hospital where the deceased K G Gunawardana of Katugastota, had succumbed to his injuries. Katugastota police are investigating.


Fake notes detected

Two persons had been arrested with six fake notes of Rs 5,000 denomination and one Rs 100 note at Boralukanda by the Hingurakkgoda Police on Tuesday.

Police also had found a computer and some accessories that had been used to produce fake currency notes in their possession. They were to be produced before the Hingurakkgoda Magistrate's Court yesterday.


Hand grenades found

Six hand grenades had been recovered by the Karadiyanaru Police at Punnampuri on Tuesday. The grenades had been buried in a forest.

Meanwhile another hand grenade had been found at a cross road in Mahaoya. The grenade has been detected by workers who were in road construction.

Mahaoya Police are investigating.
