Polls chief to cancel multiple registrations

* Over 165,000 obtain multiple registration

* Legal action against 500

The Elections Department will take legal action against persons who have multiple registrations in the electoral list.

Mahinda Deshapriya

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said some persons seem to have taken multiple registrations and deliberately avoided single registration. He said as an initial move, the Elections Department has decided to take legal action against 500 such persons for having multiple registrations in the electoral list.

According to the electoral list of 2011, over 165,000 persons have obtained multiple registrations.

The Elections Commissioner said it appears nearly half this number have obtained multiple registrations deliberately.

He said the Elections Department has sent letters to voters who have multiple registration to cancel all the other registrations and retain only one.

A majority have responded while a considerable number have not. This is a clear indication of deliberate multiple registrations, Deshapriya said.

The Commissioner said the Department will take action against persons who have registered themselves more than once in the voters’ list by providing false information.
