The Meteorology Department yesterday forecast heavy rain and
lightning throughout the island during the next few days. Sources said
atmospheric disturbances in the vicinity of Sri Lanka will affect
weather patterns across the island. Showers or thundershowers will
develop over most parts of the island particularly during the afternoon
and nights, a department spokesperson said.
“There may be temporary localised fairly strong winds during
thundershowers,” he said.
The department also warned the public to take adequate precautions
against lightning during this period. It said thundershowers will be
experienced in the Western, South- western and South- eastern coasts.
Showers can be expected at several places and sea areas around the
island. Winds will be in the South-westerly direction. The wind speed
will be 10-30 kilometres per hour. The speed may increase up to 40-50
kilometers per hour in the Western, South-western and South-eastern sea
areas. Western, South-western and South-eastern sea areas will be fairly
rough, the spokesperson said.
According to Met Department sources, the highest temperature on
Sunday was reported from Pottuvil ( 32.9 Celsius). The lowest
temperature (13.7 celsius) was reported from Nuwara-Eliya and the
highest rain fall of 62.0 mm was reported from Kuliyapitiya. |
