He said as the country is on the threshold of economic upliftment to
take it off to a developed nation, the corporate sector has a prominent
role to play to elevate Sri Lanka into prosperity and the time has come
for them to take the lead in setting an example by diversifying their
investment to unearth the gold mines of hidden resources in the country.
The corporate giants in Asia have diversified investments in every known
enterprise including film business and have become conglomerates
contributing to make these nations prosperous. Jayatilake said it was
the Federation of Commerce and Industry of India (FCCII) that became the
catalyst to get the corporate sector involvement in the Indian film
industry to make the Indian cinema capture the second largest film
market in the world. Similarly, Sri Lanka's corporate sector can be the
progenitor to take its cinema to international heights and the
government has formulated tax benefits to elevate the national cinema to
enter into the global film market. He said that Hindi language movies of
the Indian cinema has now become the second largest in terms of
worldwide film marketing and is now heading almost closer to becoming
the cinema giant of the world due to the direct intervention and the
corporate support given by the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and
Industry of India.
"The dynamic business leaders in Sri Lanka also must take a similar
catalytic step and be the pathfinders in diversifying investment to take
local films worldwide which will build the image of the country as well
as attract foreigners to visit Sri Lanka.
"If the Sri Lankan business community do not come forward to invest
in many areas of yet untapped lucrative business opportunities these
will eventually go to foreigners", he said.
