Avurudu at A’pura prisons

The Sinhala Tamil New Year festival was celebrated at the Anuradhapura Prisons on April 8 under the supervision of superintendent T I Uduwara.

Male and female prisoners of all categories participated in the ceremony and competitions.

The winners of first, second and third places in the sports competitions were awarded valuable prizes.

The festival was organised under the patronage of prisons beneficiaries association sub committee of Anuradhapura.
 


Bees attack pilgrims

Eight persons were injured when a swarm of bees attacked a group of pilgrims in the Kataragama town yesterday morning. The injured which included a child were admitted to the Kataragama Hospital. Four of the injured were later discharged. The incident took place at around 7.30 am. Police and Wildlife Department officials later visited the scene and conducted inquiries.


N’Eliya drinking water safe - Mayor

Nuwara Eliya mayor Mahinda Kumara has assured that there was no shortage of drinking water in Nuwara Eliya for the holiday crowds and they need not get alarmed since there was an outbreak of diarrhoea in the nearby Upper Kotmale where hundreds of affected patients have been admitted to the Lindula Hospital.

Meanwhile, thousands of holiday makers have poured into Nuwara Eliya.

holiday makers are spending their holidays even in their own vehicles and other open grounds around Lake Gregory due to lack of accommodation in hotels and other places catering to the holiday crowds.

He had further assured that the Nuwara Eliya drinking water is safe and hygienic and well treated by the Municipal Council.


Emeritus Bishop passes away

Emeritus Bishop of Kurunegala Rev. Andrew Oliver Kumarage has passed away. The cremation will take place at the General Cemetery Kurunegala at 3.30 pm today which will be preceded by a requiem mass at the cathedral Church of Christ the King.

National Library 22nd anniversary

The National Library and Documentation Services Board will hold a number of programmes to mark its 42nd anniversary of the the 22nd anniversary and the National Library of Sri Lanka. A seminar will be held on April 26 to make aware the library professionals and students about the services of the National Library. In addition, an exhibition of rare books and other resources of the National Library will be held from April 26 to 28.
