Syria welcomes visit by Kofi Annan

Syria: Syria on Monday welcomed the upcoming visit to Damascus of former UN chief Kofi Annan, who has been named special envoy to the strife-torn country for the United Nations and Arab League, state television said.

“Syria welcomes the visit by Kofi Annan, the special envoy of the UN secretary general,” television said, citing an official who spoke on condition of anonymity.Annan is due in Damascus on Saturday and will be accompanied by his deputy, former Palestinian foreign minister Nasser al-Qudwa.
