Syria welcomes visit by Kofi Annan
Syria on Monday welcomed the upcoming visit to
Damascus of former UN chief Kofi Annan, who has been named special
envoy to the strife-torn country for the United Nations and Arab
League, state television said.

China urges US to respect its interests in Asia
China on Tuesday called on the United States to
respect its interests in the Asia Pacific, as Washington seeks to
boost its influence in the region. China’s territorial disputes with
countries including Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and Vietnam
have intensified in recent years and its neighbours have accused
Beijing of behaving aggressively.

Qaeda claims dozens of Baghdad attacks
Al-Qaeda’s front group in Iraq claimed dozens of
attacks in Baghdad this year, including a suicide bomb at a funeral
and the assassination of the head of a women’s prison, in a
statement seen on Tuesday. In a post on jihadist forum Honein, the
Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) listed 43 incidents it was responsible
for between January 10 and February 10 in the Iraqi capital.
