Alert conductor informs police:

A passenger traveling in a private coach proceeding to Matara from Colombo was nabbed with dozens of counterfeit currency notes by the Kalutara North Police last week. The man was nabbed following a tip-off from the conductor.

The Police seized nine counterfeit notes in the denomination of Rs 2,000, 21 notes in the denomination of Rs 1,000 and 39 notes in the denomination of Rs 500 from the suspect.

The Police said the suspect from Hikkaduwa, got into the bus from Kalutara, and gave a Rs 100 note to the private coach conductor. He had then asked for a ticket.

The conductor felt suspicious and informed the Traffic Police.

The Police found dozens of counterfeit notes in the possession of the suspect.

The suspect produced before Kalutara magistrate Kaniska Wijeratne was remanded until January 30.

Meanwhile, the Police informed the Counterfeit Currency Notes Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department.
