New rule for school van drivers

A new rule has been introduced with immediate effect where drivers transporting schoolchildren should be over 30 years, Colombo Division Senior DIG Anura Senanayake said when he met Western Province three wheeler drivers and motorists transporting schoolchildren on Saturday.

Senior DIG Senanayake said that on President Mahinda Rajapaksa's directive, IGP N K Illangakoon had instructed him to educate three wheeler drivers and motorists transporting schoolchildren in the Western Province.

“They should also possess a driving license for the last five years and they should also be attired properly and not be in sleeveless shirts and shorts,” he said.

Anyone violating these rules will be prosecuted, Senior DIG Senanayake said. Over 1,000 three wheeler drivers and other vehicles transporting schoolchildren participated in the meeting held at the Colombo Traffic Headquarters.
