Economic development must be equitable -Minister Peiris
External Affairs Minister Professor G.L.Peiris was the chief guest at
the 53rd annual general meeting of the National Chamber of Commerce,
held at Continental Hotel, Colombo recently.
Prof. Peiris, in his address, explained the economic policy of the
government for making use of the wide range of opportunities now
available to the country after the eradication of terrorism.
Economic development, he said, must not only be rapid but also
equitable, making it possible for its benefits to be enjoyed not only in
and around the capital city but throughout the rural hinterland.
He dealt with the measures which the government had adopted to ensure
that the growth of the economy, currently at the threshold of 8%,
reflects itself in tangible benefits transforming the lives of the
people.
He minister laid particular stress on connectivity and skills
development as key components of the government's economic strategy, and
identified, as one of its central features, a pragmatic balance between
mega projects, essential for the country's well-being in the long and
medium term, and projects at the village level providing relief for the
people in the short term by the improvement of facilities with regard to
transport, education and healthcare.
Minister Peiris underlined the importance of ensuring that any plan
for economic development, if it is to be relevant and sustainable, is in
harmony with the values and cultural traditions of the people.
He emphasized the need for a fruitful partnership between government
and private sector to maximize the benefits accruing to the nation from
the current climate of peace and stability. President of the National
Chamber of Commerce Asoka Hettigoda set out the three main objectives of
the Chamber – expanding Sri Lanka's trade and commercial relations with
the Asian region, sustainable development and the refining of skills.
He explained the Chamber's programme of work for the year ahead. The
launch of the Annual Report and the News Bulletin at the National
Chamber of Commerce was one of the highlights of the proceedings.
