Essential items, dry rations and school equipment were distributed among the families of tsunami victims to rebuild the livelihoods of the families, by a group headed by Ven. K. Gunarathana from Singapore and Lion’s Club 308 (S’pore) president Lion Ratnam with the participation of Hambantota District Parliamentarian Attorney-at-Law Namal Rajapaksa at Siribopura in Hambantota yesterday. A pinkama was also held to invoke blessings on tsunami victims on the same day. The programme was jointly organized by the Tharunyata Hetak , Weeraketiya Lions Club and Hambantota Lions Club. Here Rajapaksa MP welcoming the foreign delegation.

International Monetary Co-operation Senior Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama opened the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) office in New Delhi last week. Dr. Amunugama is the chairman of the United Nations ESCAP General Conference. With him is UN Under Secretary General Dr. Noeline Heyzer. The others in the picture are ambassadors for Iran and Pakistan.

The donation of exercise books, organized by the Civil Security Department Seva Vanitha Unit was held at its headquarters in Bambalapitiya under the patronage of First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa. The book donation, initiated by the Civil Security Department Seva Vanitha Unit President Kumudini Peiris on the instructions of Director General Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris, was held for the second consecutive year. The exercise books valued at Rs. 9 million was presented to children of Civil Security Department members. Scholarships were also awarded to four children who had obtained the highest marks at the Year 5 scholarship examination in 2011, three children who passed the GCE O-L examination in 2010 and two students who had passed the GCE A-L examination and gained university admission.

Prime Minister D M Jayaratne unveils a plaque to mark the opening of a Seva Piyasa rural secretariat at the Doluwa Divisional Secretariat office recently. Provincial Council member Nissanka Herath, Uda Palatha Pradeshiya Sabha chairman D G Gunasena and Doluwa Divisional Secretary D M N G G T Karunaratne were also present.
