Highest schol awards to migrant worker children

Kingsley Ranawaka

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) awarded educational scholarships worth an unprecedented Rs. 34.1 million to migrant worker children during 2011, chairman Kingsley Ranawaka said.

The educational scholarship scheme for migrant worker children was initiated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his tenure as the Labour Minister from 1994 - 1997.

At its inception 145 children of migrant workers received educational scholarships.

The programme since then has gone from strength to strength and today it provides assistance to thousands of migrant worker children annually who excel in various spheres of education.

According to Ranawaka in 2011, nearly 2,000 children benefited from the scholarship scheme.
