Disna MUDALIGE
The cyclonic storm Thane had moved away from Sri Lanka. it would most
probably enter the Indian east coast today, Meteorology Department
meteorologist D A Jayasingharachchi told the Daily News yesterday.
He said that the cyclone over the Bay of Bengal was located about 350
kms Northeast of Jaffna by noon yesterday. It was about 300 kms from
Chennai and was moving with an average speed of about 15 to 20 km per
hour. He observed that it was likely to move westwards from its eye
towards the Indian east coast.
The Fishing and naval community have been further advised to refrain
from maritime activities in the shallow and deep sea areas off the coast
extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Jaffna, as these sea areas
would be very rough with very strong winds and intermittent rain due to
the Cyclonic conditions.
He also said that strong winds and showers are expected in the Jaffna
peninsula today while fairly strong winds are expected in the
Northwestern, Eastern and North Central provinces and rest of the areas
in the Northern Province. |
