Green peas cultivation to get off ground

Green peas cultivation which was introduced between Yala and Maha seasons was successful and over 500 acres have been cultivated, Moneragala District Inter Provincial Agriculture Department sources said.

About 160,000 kilograms are expected from Okkampitiya and Siyambalanduwa in the Moneragala district. Green pea cultivation was experimented in abandoned paddyfields.

Moneragala District Inter Provincial Agriculture Department Additional Secretary H.D.K. De S. Siriwardena said that this type of leguminous plants would fertile the soil and will bring a good revenue for farmers as the cost is low for the cultivation. As an inter seasonal crop, Green peas will be the best alternative for the farmers, he said.
