National grid can generate 2,980 megawatts - minister

"There is a daily demand of 2,000 megawatts and at present the Ceylon
Electricity Board (CEB) has the ability to generate around 2,980
megawatts to meet the consumer demand. There is a problem with hydro
power generation. But other power plants are engaged in power generation
at a sustainable level", said Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika
Ranawaka.
"Other countries in the South Asian Region, such as, India,
Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan are enforcing power cuts from
eight to 16 hours a day. But Sri Lanka has the ability to provide a
qualitative power supply to the public," he added.
The minister was addressing the launching of the SLS ISO 50001
International Energy Management System held at the BMICH.
The Sustainable Energy Authority which had been established by the
Power and Energy Ministry to manage energy to establish the
International Energy Management Systems in collaboration with the Sri
Lanka Standards Institution. |
