TAG holds Members Night



TAG Executive Committee members at the event

TAG Member’s Club a social community, formed with in the outbound airline industry, comprising staffs of travel agencies, airlines and Global Distribution System (GDSs) providers held its first social event for the Club Members since its inauguration in May this year on November 25.

The primary activity of TAG is to protect and promote fellowship amongst the colleagues in the trade. The foundation to form TAG was laid almost an year ago. Until mid 2011 the ground work was done when it was launched at the Ceylon Continental Hotel on May 25 amidst a distinguished gathering of airline Country Managers, and Senior Managers of GSAs, Travel Agencies and GDSs. Unveling the club to the trade, the chief guest, the then CEO of the national carrier, Manoj Gunawardena, expressed the importance of the blooming of this club, at a time when the industry lacked social interaction most.

Steered by a dynamic team, TAG has grown from strength to strength since its tender days. The tireless Ex Co of the club has made every possible effort to ensure that its members build strong relationships, bonds between them through TAG. The beach party was indeed a testimony of their indisputable success and of the club in a very short period. More than 300 members danced, laughed and made new friends at an evening that extended till next dawn.

Welcoming the members, the President, Nishan Seneviratne, said that it is astonishing to see so much of an anxious crowd looking forward to the evening, despite the adverse weather conditions. He asked the members to enjoy and make new friends through TAG; and promised that more events filled with fellowship are lined up in the near future. He also thanked Dialog Axiata PLC., the principal sponsor of the club for a period of two years, for being part of this tremendous success.


OpenArc recruits new batch

Colombo University BIT Degree:

OpenArc School of Business and Technology is enrolling new students for the Bachelor of Information Technology external degree (BIT) of the Colombo University, especially targeting those who sat for GCE (A/L) this year.

OpenArc, an institution that had been conducting classes for the Colombo University BIT degree for a period of ten years since the inception of the programme has made arrangements to give special discounts for students registering for the new batch.

The Colombo University is the pioneer in introducing internal and external degrees in the ICT sphere in Sri Lanka.

The Human Resources Development external degree in the ICT field, which was first launched by the Colombo University, as it was considered a necessity at the time, has now earned national and international recognition.

Students who had passed three subjects in the GCE (Advanced Level) examination can enrol directly to read for the BIT external degree, while those with lesser qualifications can also do so by first successfully completing the Foundation in Information Technology (FIT) course after their GCE (O/L).

Also, students, who sat for the GCE (Advanced Level) examination and are still awaiting results, can also make use of this opportunity to enrol for the BIT external degree course enrolling with pending results.

OpenArc School has planned to begin the academic programme for new batch on first week of December and conduct classes two days per one week on Wednesday and Thursday from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm.

The first examination for this batch will be held on March next year (2012) by the Colombo University.

This BIT academic programme has been designed to prepare students to successfully face that exam.

NDB Bank enhances Jeevana livelihood scheme



Newly passed out batch of 23 students with NDB Bank CEO Russell De Mel and Mahendra Hulangamuwa, the Principal of the International Hotel School of Mount Lavinia Hotel.

Twenty Three students received a comprehensive training course in Hotel Operations, conducted In association with the International Hotel School of Mt Lavinia Hotel under the NDB Jeevana Livelihood Development Scheme.

This is the second batch from the East who completed and graduated in Hotel Operations.

NDB Jeevana Livelihood programme provides a six month comprehensive training course, covering four months of theory and two months of practical training in selected vocation in partnership with industry leaders of respective fields.

All candidates are provided with on the job training at star class hotels, while in motor mechanism, practical training is provided by the partnering organization DIMO.

Speaking at the Passing Out Ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of NDB Bank, Russell de Mel said, ``We have recognized the advent of economic proliferation within the East coast in Sri Lanka and has become an integral part of the development process by empowering youth in the demands of growing opportunities in tourism.

We have identified talented youth in Sri Lanka through this programme.

Initiated in September 2010, the Livelihood Development Program has now witnessed three batches of youth graduating, two from the East coast in Hotel Operations and one batch from the North in Motor Mechanism.

The programme has spread its wings to the South in Hotel Operations which is the fourth batch.

Suntel fourth Service Day on December 11

The concept of having a ‘Service Day’ is a novel idea by the Administration & Facilities Management Department of Suntel. The third event took place last year where over 300 workers participated and was a tremendous success.

The ‘Service Day’ is dedicated for the support service Staff attached to Suntel who are in fact hired staff from other service organizations to handle the security, building maintenance, janitorial, tea service, transport, courier, technical maintenance etc who extend invaluable support in facilitating the day to day operational activities of Suntel.

Suntel considers sponsoring this event a pleasure and also considers it very appropriate in appreciating and acknowledging the dedicated service extended to Suntel by the individual staff of such service organizations. This, Suntel believes undoubtedly an investment towards building and strengthening relationships with the service organizations and their staff for mutual benefit.

During this full day programme, the events include sports activities and more importantly ‘Service Recognition Awards’ to reward and recognize special contributions and outstanding performance by the service staff during the year. In addition to that, Suntel has organized special events with Kids Art Completion and Recognition Programme for Year Five Exam passed students among the children of the staff.
