Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa presided yesterday when
Parliament met at 9.30 am. After the presentation of papers and oral
questions, the House took up the second reading of the Appropriation
Bill for the fifth alloted day.

Tissa Vitarana speaking in Parliament on behalf of the Lanka Sama
Samaja Party (LSSP) appreciated President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the
officials of the Finance Ministry for the manner in which they have
run the economy during the last year, since the previous budget,
maintaining stability, strengthening foreign reserves and achieving
an eight percent growth rate, reducing unemployment to five percent,
poverty to 8.9 percent and inflation to five percent despite the
deepening economic crisis of the global capitalist system.
