Ortega reelected, dependent on Chavez
NICARAGUA: Leftist President Daniel Ortega may have been easily
reelected to a third term in Nicaragua, but he will remain dependent on
aid from Venezuela's Hugo Chavez to meet the expectations of the
country's poor who voted for him en masse.
Ortega won reelection Sunday with 60 percent of the vote in polls
that also gave his Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) a
majority broad enough in the unicameral legislature to change the
constitution.
The results were immediately contested by his two main rivals, Fabio
Gadea, who came in second with 30.9 percent of the ballots, and former
president Arnoldo Aleman, who got six percent, charged fraud. MANAGUA,
