Three robbers netted

The Kilinochchi Police took into custody three robbers who are planners of numerous robberies that had taken place recently at Kilinochchi. Police have recovered three identity cards, toy pistols, Rs 300,000 in cash, gold jewels, two motorcycles and a bank receipt of a deposit of Rs 120,000. Two brothers from Barathypuram Kilinochchi and another from Ariyalai have been arrested.


Jaffna fishermen benefit

Permission has been granted to fish in the sea off Keerimalai to Thondamanaru a distance of 13 kilometres from November 8 after twenty one years by Jaffna Commander Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe.

Fishermen of Keerimalai, Kankesanthurai, Oorany, Myliddy and Thondamanaru will restart their traditional fishing occupation. In 1983, one third of the catch from Jaffna came from the banned area and the pier at Myliddy was the hub of fishing activity. In 1990, the fishermen of Myliddy and Kankesanthurai area were evacuated to safe areas.


Man dies in collision

One person died and six others were critically injured and admitted to the Puttalam hospital following a lorry-van collision near the 10th km post on the Anuradhapura-Puttalam road yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Thiagarajah Selvaratnam, 34, of Karanjadi, Nelliady.

One of the injured, a three and a half year girl was later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital. Karuwalagaswewa police is investigating.


Road developed

Rs 15.1 million has been allocated to concrete 22 kilometre road in the Koralaipattu Pradesheeya Sabha area in the Eastern Province. This was revealed by Road Development, Housing and Construction, Irrigation, Rural Electrification and Water Supply Minister M.S. Uthumalebbe after opening the inaugural ceremony.


Japan funds Eastern development

Japan has funded Rs 1,894 million to reconstruct several irrigation tanks, rural roads and provincial roads damaged by floods in the Eastern Province, Eastern Provincial Road Development, Housing and Construction, Irrigation, Rural Electrification and Water Supply, Minister M.S. Uthumalebbe said. He said Rs 410 million will be allocated to renovate tanks, Rs 214 million for rural roads and Rs 1,270 million for provincial roads.


Pirith chanting

An all night Pirith chanting will be held at Susamayawardhana School, Colombo 8 in commemoration with its 110th anniversary on November 10 from 8.30 p.m. onwards at the school premises.

Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, Colombo Municipal Council Mayor A.J.M. Musammil, Borella SLFP Organizer Thilanga Sumathipala MP will also participate.


Medical Crossword Draw

Healthwatch Medical Crossword Draw No. 50 will be held on November 12 at 10.30 a.m. as part of a seminar on awareness on hearing problems of children and adults organized by the WISH Institute in association with the Philips Hospital in Kalutara.


Grants to dig agro-wells

The North-Western Provincial Agriculture Ministry will provide grants for farmers to sink agro-wells at their farms.

Farmers who are facing the shortage of water for cultivation can apply for the grants. Each farmer will be offered Rs 100,000 for this.


One stabbed

A person, Nirodha Pushpakumara, 26, of Wilgamuwa, Alawwa was stabbed with a kitchen knife (mannaya). He died after admission to the Kurunegala hospital.

S. P. Gunasinghe, 55, of the same village has been arrested in this connection by Alawwa police.

He was remanded after being produced before Polgahawela Magistrates court.


Arms and ammo found

A large haul of arms and ammunition was detected by the Army during search operations conducted in the North between October 30 and November 5, said army headquarters in a press release yesterday. The operations were conducted in the Karappakutti, Vishwamadu, Munisumoddai, Kaiveli, Gajabapura, Miyankolla, Kachchei, Arlankerni, Maradamadu, Minunkan, Tammennakulam, Mahilankulam, Palampiddi, Kokkuthuduvai, Kanchikuddichchiaru, Kannadi, Tonithattamadu, Angodavillu, Kilaly, Verugal, Mahadivulweva, Pudikudiruppu and Madhu areas.

The haul included 1335 antipersonnel mines, 41 RPG bombs, 44 hand grenades, six artillery shells of 122 mm calibre, two claymore mines, two anti tank bombs, one 40 mm bomb, two Arul bombs, 133 mortar bombs of 81 mm, Calibre, two mortar bombs of 60 mm calibre, six electric detonators, 400 T-56 ammunition, 72 mm 127 ammunition, one air dropping bomb, two M.B.R.L. Ammunition, 1.5 kg of C-4 explosives, one mortar bomb of 122 mm calibre, one T-81 rifle and one T-81 magazine.


Kandy Tourism and Trade Exhibition

Central Provincial Council will conduct Tourism Promotional and Trade Exhibition from November 10-13 at the Kandy City Centre with the support of the Tourism Ministry and the Ministry of Economic Development, in Kandy with the aim of strengthening the Sri Lankan landmark in the global tourism sector and of extending economic life of Kancy city.

Visit Kandy-2011 is a single component among the number of government's strategies to promote Sri Lankan tourism in the global arena.
