For better police - public relations

Public Consultative Committees are to be set up in all police areas by Police Headquarters to build a better rapport and co-ordination between police stations and the public and to convert the Police into a service, gaining public trust and confidence.

IGP N K Ilangakoon has indicated this step in a circular issued to all senior DIGs, DIGs, SSPs and OICs.

Senior DIG (Administration) Gamini Navaratne said this programme will be implemented in all the 438 police areas covered by the 43 police divisions in the country.

Each of those committees will include a membership of seven including a religious dignitary, representing all religions, a school principal, a government pensioner, a doctor and a representative of a voluntary organisation.

These committees should be set up before October 30, the circular stated.
