Preliminary arrangements have been finalized for issuing a new digital national identity card instead of the present identity card, the Department of Registration of Persons said.

The new identity card will meet the present day requirements both locally and abroad since it will contain more details.

Many details which are not available in the current identity card have been added to the new identity card.

This unique new digital identity card can also be used overseas.

The authenticity of the new digital identity card is high as many security measures have been introduced to the digital identity card.

Considering certain shortcomings identified with the present identity card, especially during the humanitarian mission the Department of Registration of Persons took measures to go for the digital format. The new digital identity card will be issued free of charge for those who are using the present identity card issued by the Department.

With the introduction of the new digital identity card, the issuing of the current identity card will come to an end.

Gradually, it will replace all old identity cards, Department official said.
