A group of candidates of the Colombo’s UNP list contesting the
elections is to join the UPFA within the next two days, Economic
Development Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said.
“All measures are in place to develop Colombo city as a model city
within the next four years,” he added. The UNP wants Colombo to remain a
city of shanty dwellers to gain petty political benefits and to make
allegations against the government.
The deputy minister was addressing the final press briefing of the
UPFA’s political campaign for the final phase of the Local Government
elections, at the Mahaweli Centre yesterday. “Leader of the opposition
Ranil Wickremesinghe is always saying that the government is doing
everything for Hambantota.
Through such statements he is trying to reduce the number of votes
which the UNP may receive in Hambantota.
‘The other UNP leader Sajith Premadasa is trying to reduce the number
of votes in Colombo. This is happening because of the conflict in the
opposition”, the minister said. The public has endorsed the President’s
development programme and they always support the Government to achieve
its development goals.
“There is no doubt about the UPFA’s victory at the elections. The
public know that the government will win the economic war as they won
the terrorist war,” the deputy minister said. |
