Peru vice minister apprised on SL situation

External Affairs Deputy Minister Neomal Perera apprised Peru Foreign Affairs Vice Minister Jose Antonio Meier on the post-conflict development process in Sri Lanka including the humanitarian operations up to May 2009, at a meeting when he visited Peru recently.

Deputy Minister Perera also briefed him on the ongoing work of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and reiterated that it should be given the time and space to continue its work until the report is submitted. He said President Mahinda Rajapaksa established the LLRC on the principle of restorative justice, and focused on identifying the institutional and legislative measures needed to be implemented to prevent the recurrence of such conflicts in the future.

The Peruvian Vice Minister said Peru understands the workings of a truth and reconciliation commission as Peru too faced political violence at the hands of the Shining Path movement.
