Fines upped on forcing through level crossings

Motorists who try to cross level crossings when the railway gate is closed will face an increased fine of Rs. 25,000.

A Sri Lanka Railway spokesman said if any motorist tries to cross the level crossing when the gate is closed, he will be slapped a Rs. 25,000.

"This is effective from this month. The fine which was only Rs. 5,000 earlier has been increased to Rs. 25,000 with the objective of reducing accidents at level crossings which were frequently witnessed in the recent past," the spokesman said.
