UPFA Colombo Municipal Council mayoral candidate Milinda Moragoda met religious leaders, businessmen and residents at Dawatagaha Wednesday evening to discuss issues concerning people of Colombo and briefed them on the 12-point 100 day programme and the policy platform of making Colombo city, a centre of excellence of the country.



Lecture on earthquakes

The Royal Asiatic Society Sri Lanka (RASSL) will conduct a lecture on Indian Ocean Earthquakes and Tsunamis by Professor Jinadasa, Katupotha Department of Geography, University of Sri Jayewardenepura Gangodawila, Nugegoda on September 26 at 5 pm at the Gamini Dissanayake auditorium No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.


Fined for running unregistered sawmill

A man who ran a sawmill without being registered with the conservator of forests was arrested by Ingiriya Range Forest Officers and was fined Rs 40,000 by Horana Magistrate Mahinda Ranasinghe.

The magistrate advised him to take immediate action to register this sawmill.


Jail for Lankan woman in Bermuda

A Sri Lankan accountant who swindled an insurance company out of more than $75,000 was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment in Bermuda yesterday.

Info Dept seminar

The second in a series of seminars organized by the Government Informations Department to educate journalists on the development work undertaken in districts as part of the government’s overall development drive will be held at the Polonaruwa District Secretariat auditorium on September 24 at 9 a.m. Health Minister Maitrhiapala Sirisena will be the chief guest.

North Central Provincial Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayke, Deputy Minister Siripala Gamlath and Chandrasiri Sooriyarachchi, Director of Information Vasanthapriya Ramanayake and Media Centre for Development Information Director General Ariya Rubasinghe will also be present.

Parliamentarian J.R.P. Suriapperuma will deliver a lecture on ‘Sri Lanka’s development process and its progress, while Polonnaruwa District Secretary Nimal Abeysiri will speak on ‘Development in the Polonnaruwa district’. Government Information Director General Prof. Ariyaratne Athugala will deliver a lecture on ‘Development and media’.


Carnatic vocal music recital

A carnatic vocal music recital by Bagawathssing Nithiyanandan organized by the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo will be held on September 30 at 6.30 p.m at the ICC premises 16/2, Gregory’s Road, opposite the Australian High Commission Colombo 7. Nithiyanandan completed his Diploma in carnatic music at the Swami Vipulananda Music and Dance College, Battticaloa.


Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi

The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo is organizing an event to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi with a lecture on Gandhi and a special thematic Bharata Natyam performance on the occasion of his birth anniversary on October 3 at 6.00 p.m at the ICC premises 16/2, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7. Ven Olande Ananda will deliver a lecture on Mahatma Gandi as a tribute. Ven. Olande Ananda has been a member of the Buddha’s Light International Association from Taiwan/USA.

Meanwhile, the lecture will be followed by a Bharata Natyam recital titled Natyollasah Bharata Natyam thematic programme by Dr. Padmaja Venkatesh.

Memorial oration

The fourth K.C. Kamalasabayson PC Memorial Oration will be held today at 5.30 p.m at the Sri Lanka Law College Auditorium.

The Kamalasabayson Memorial oration on ‘Fundamental Rights - Changing Judicial Attitudes’ will be delivered by President’s Counsel Faisz Musthapha.

Young poets society

The American Centre Colombo will host the ‘Young Poets Society’ on September 27 at 4.00 p.m at the American centre Auditorium, 44, Galle Road, Colombo 03.

This is an opportunity for young people to showcase their talent and express themselves freely.

Young poets who have submitted their poems will read them to the audience.

Guest artist (poet and writer) and Deputy Director, US-SL Fulbright Commission Ramya Jirasinghe, will present her remarks at the end of the readings. Entrance is free.

Health seminar

A health seminar will be held at Apeksha Fertility Care on September 25 at 7.30 p.m.

The seminar includes a lecture on Polycystic ovarian disease by Dr. Hemantha Perera (VOG) and on sperm preparation for IUI and sperm donation by Dr Champa Nelson.


Portraits to be unveiled

OPA President U.H. Palihakkara will ceremonially unveil the portraits of three past presidents of the Institute of Supply and Materials Management - V. Ganesh, Air Vice Marshal Duncan Dissanayake and Chandana Jayatillake, today at 6.00 p.m at the OPA Auditorium.

A blood donation camp to commemorate the 16th death anniversary of war hero Sujeewa Jayanath Kumarannaha of the Military Police, will be held at 178/3, Somasiri Stores, Kesbewa on September 25 from 9 am to 3 pm.


Betting centre robbed

Two unidentified armed men entered a betting centre at Weligama on Wednesday night and removed Rs 59,657 from the safe after threatening the staff and locking them in a room.


Kalutara Dhamma schools to open

Kalutara district Shasanarakshaka Balamandala Secretary Ven Gonaduwe Gunananda Thera said all Dhamma schools in the Kalutara district which were to remain closed indefinitely to protest a liquor shop near a Dhamma school in Wadduwa will be opened.

The Thera said the court decision in this regard was satisfactory and Dhamma school Principals agreed to open schools from September 25, he said.


ANCL correspondent dies

The Lake House Ja-Ela Group Correspondent Wilfred Silva has passed away. His remains are lying at his residence at Jositawatta Ja-Ela and the funeral will take place at Kudahakapola Public Cemetery.


Health camp for journalists

The Uththma Shrama Pooja health camp organized by the provincial directorate of health services, Colombo will be conducted for journalists at All Ceylon Buddhist Congress hall, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 on September 27 from 8am to 5pm with the participation of doctors from all disciplines of medicine.

Western Province Health Ministry Director Dr. Amal Harsha at a media briefing at the Government Information Department said that journalists with the media card issued by the Information Department will be the target group.
