UN chief calls for collective effort
President Mahinda Rajapaksa attended the 66th
sessions of the UN General Assembly which began in New York on
Wednesday. UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in his opening address
said the climatic problems currently faced by almost all countries
in the world have posed a serious threat to entire mankind.

A woman takes Russia’s number three post
Russia’s upper house on Wednesday elected the
ex-governor of Saint Petersburg Valentina Matviyenko as its speaker,
giving a woman for the first time one of the top state posts in the
country. atviyenko, who was in charge of Russia’s second city from
2003 until earlier this year, was overwhelmingly approved as
Federation Council speaker in a ceremonial vote with 140 votes in
favour, one abstention and none against.

According to India’s Economic Planning Body:
‘Any villager earning 50 cents a day not poor’
India’s economic planning body has said any
villager earning 50 cents a day is not poor and should not qualify
for a government ration card — a figure condemned by experts on
Wednesday. Those with a daily income of 25 rupees (50 cents) in
villages and 32 rupees (65 cents) in cities should be ineligible for
subsidised food and other supplies, the Planning Commission told
India’s Supreme Court.
