Woman-headed families in Puthukudiyirippu receive poultry
Some of the beneficiaries |
Since July FAO has provided 125,000 month-old farmyard chicks to some
6,250 conflict affected families in the North and East. Most families
are women headed and the objective of this support is to improve food
security through egg production as well as income through sales of birds
and eggs.
In Puthukudiyirippu recently, 125 such families received a poultry
package consisting of 20-40 old day unsexed chicks. Another 125 families
will receive poultry packages this month. The women beneficiaries said
they were very happy to receive the inputs as it will enhance their
family nutrition levels as well as provide some income.
The backyard poultry programme is being implemented by FAO with
financial assistance from many donors in both the North and East. The
recent poultry distribution at Puthukudiyirippu was funded by USA. All
work in the field with poultry is implemented in collaboration with the
district Department of Animal Production and Health. |
