Husband charged with wife's murder

A women died after she was allegedly assaulted by her husband in front of her house at Temple Road, Medawachchiya on Saturday around 5 pm.

Ishara Sithumini, 19, a mother of twins aged two succumbed to her injuries after her husband (Duminda of Dambuwewa, Medawachchiya) allegedly hit her on her head with a pestle. One child narrowly escaped the blows, Medawachchiya police said.

Renuka Damayanthi, an aunt of Sithumini who was critical after being attacked by Duminda was admitted to Medawachchiya hospital and later to the Anuradhapura hospital ICU. Medawachchiya police said that Duminda appeared before Medawachchiya OIC with one child after the attack, and confessed that he had committed the crime.

It was revealed that Sithumini had filed a divorce case and Duminda was to pay compensation for the two children from this month.

Police suspect that this family dispute might be the cause for the alleged killing of his wife. Medawachchiya OIC B M I Dissanayake is investigating.
