Wayamba Group Importers and Exporters Managing Director S.H Sadikeen
told Daily News Business that they have been exporting spices to
countries including Taiwan and Japan for several years.
He added that Sri Lanka has been famous for her natural spices from
ancient times and the demand for Sri Lankan spices are increasing, he
said. "Spices now play an important role in Sri Lankan exports," he
said.
"We have trained more than 2,000 farmers to cultivate spices such as
peper, nutmeg and maize to international standards. Our vehicles go
round the country to collect spices giving the farmer a market at their
door step," he said.
"We have already signed an agreement to provide seeds and fertilizer
for farmers in an effort to boost production. The intention of our
company is to provide better prices for farmers who are engaged in
spices growing," he said.
"The country has achieved a significant quantitative increase in
Soybean production and we are looking to export Soya to the other
countries specially Japan in the future," he added. |
