Athletic star Denzil dies
Denzil Fernando who dominated the track both here and abroad for many
years has passed away. Denzil began his athletic career at St.
Sebastians College, Moratuwa and then progressed when he joined the Ace
Athletic Club. His pet event was the 800 metres where he broke the
record and held it for many years. He was a versatile athlete who
excelled in many events such as the quarter hurdles and the decathlon.
He represented Sri Lanka many times and always returned with either a
record or having beaten international athletes of repute. He was also a
member of the Asian Games team with other greats such as
Ethiriveerasingham, P don Victor, T.D.S.A. Dissanayake and Tara Bolling.
In later years he was one of the first participants in the Masters Games
where he went on to establish several records.
Denzil was a dedicated athlete who gave his time and service to
nurture young athletes. He was invited to coach Methodist Bishops and
Ladies’ College and has produced many athletes of repute. He was
responsible for the fitness training given to the centenary Royal
College cricket team which was led by Ranjan Madugalle.
He spent long hours at the CR & FC some of which were spent giving
useful tips on fitness to young rugby players. He leaves behind his wife
Christine and daughter Arosha.
His funeral takes place on September 12 (Monday) at Kanatte with
cortege leaving A F Raymond’s Funeral Parlour. |
