The United Nations Industry Development Organization has provided US
$ 20 million to develop Sri Lanka's bamboo industry. Plans are underway
to cultivate 10,000 hectares of land under this new programme.
Under this programme, it is expected to introduce advance technology
and Indian knowledge.
"Since the government is focusing on green exports and bamboo is an
environment-friendly plant, the ministry will provide support to uplift
and develop bamboo cultivation," Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad
Bathiudeen said.
Research has already started on the best areas and climate in Sri
Lanka for bamboo varieties. Rules regarding bamboo transportation is
also to be changed as to support the industry and protect bamboo plants,
the minister said. |
