Speed fiend injured in crash with dog
A speed fiend was thrown off his motor cycle when it collided with a
stray dog that ran across the road at Polygandy. He was admitted to
Point Pedro hospital in a serious condition. The injured is Thangarajah
Kokulan, 21, of Velanai.

Bus for Jaffna Education College
The AMCOR organization presented a luxury bus worth Rs 52 lakhs to
the Jaffna College of Education. The Dean of the college K Yoganathan
received the keys of the bus at a ceremony.

Fuel stations in Jaffna
Two fuel stations were opened in Jaffna at the Jaffna Clock Tower
road and at Chunnakam Kankesanthurai road on September 10 by Petroleum
Industries Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardene. Deputy Minister Basheer
Segu Dawood, Petroleum Corporation Chairman Harry Jayawardene and other
officials were present. Fuel station owners announced that the two
stations will function day and night.

UC to maintain elders’ home
An elders’ home is to be built and maintained by the Valvettithurai
Urban Council within its jurisdiction and a Readers’ Week from October 1
to 31 has been proclaimed at the first meeting of Valvettithurai Town
Council presided by S Anandaraj.
It was also decided to take steps to bring back the Thondamanaru
Field Centre that functions in Jaffna to Thondamanaru.
This field centre conducts scientific experiments and examinations in
science, social science and mathematics for Jaffna schools.

Point Pedro UC first meeting
At the first meeting of Point Pedro Urban Council presided by N Saba
Ravindran it was decided an art centre and tourist centre to be built at
Beach Road, Point Pedro.
It was also decided to construct a stadium and a modern library. A
Children’s Park will also be constructed at College Road, Point Pedro.

Petition Box at office
Chavakachcheri Urban Council Chairman M E Devasakayam Pillai has set
up a Petition Box in his office. Pillai also listens to the grievances
of the people and takes immediate action to remedy them.

Employment for 6,000
The cottage handicraft exhibition being held at Jaffna Hindu College
can help find employment for 6,000 people, said Additional Government
Agent, Jaffna Rubini Varatharalingam. She said that those who come to
the exhibition get the opportunity to see and select cottage industries
displayed at 35 stalls. “Under the Divi Neguma, Rs 108 million has been
allocated for Jaffna district. Those who come to the exhibition can
select the cottage industry they prefer and fill in the forms available
at the exhibition”, she said.

Man dies in mishap
Inthayarajan Sahayarajah Lambert, 24, a minor employee working at the
Mannar hospital operation theater died on the spot when his motor cycle
collided with a Sri Lanka Transport Board bus. The accident took place
at Mannar Nanatan main road on September 8. He is a native of Arippu.

Compensation for families
Land owners whose land were acquired at Karinagar by the Navy for
their expansion 25 years ago, will be compensated.“We will compensate
land owners on the request of MP Vijayakala Maheswaran”, said Lands and
Land Development Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon presenting cheques to
owners of the land acquired by the Navy at a function in Karainagar.
Forty six families received compensation.

Kappam case: three remanded
Three army personnel were produced before the Kilinochchi magistrate
on a charge of extorting kappam by threatening on telephone at Pallai.
The Kilinochchi magistrate ordered the suspects to be remanded till
September 14.

Decomposed body found
A decomposed body of a male was found at Putur Meesalai road in
Vithavani. The body has been taken to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for
identification and post mortem examination.

Attempt to enter PS head’s house foiled
A man attempted to enter the house of Valigamam West Pradeshiya Sabha
chairman Nagaranjini Iynkaran. The man had attempted to enter the house
through the roof during a power failure. The noise on the roof alerted
Iynkaran who raised cries. The man had then escaped. Vaddukoddai police
are investigating.

St Anthony’s College, Kayts won the first place at the physical
training competition of international schools conducted by the
Department of Education at Badulla Sarlivella Urban Council grounds.
