Crime busting: professional approach wanted

A people-friendly Police service can only be guaranteed through a highly professional approach towards cracking down diverse crimes and unlawful activities in the country, Southern Province Deputy Inspector General of Police Vijaya Amarasinghe said.

He was addressing a function at the Galle Headquarters Police station last Saturday to mark the 145th anniversary of the Sri Lanka police service.

He said, the Police should always strive to build cordial and fraternal relationship with the public upholding the peace and harmony in the society and to educate the public over their rights, privileges and obligations as well. The Police should always assist, guide and participate in community activities through Civil Defence Committees and such other civil organizations, the DIG further said.

The function though brief, was held in a dignified manner with multi religious activities given priority. Several leading community leaders, government heads and non governmental institutions and ex servicemen with their family members also participated. ASP Jayantha Liyanage and Galle HQI Sathis Gamage also spoke while SP S.C. Widanapathirana presented the anniversary message of the Inspector General of Police N. K. Ilangakoon.
