Maligawatte housing scheme renovation to be over by December

The renovation of the Maligawatte housing scheme, launched after a
lapse of 38 years, will be fully completed by December. Around 8,500
people live in the housing scheme. President Mahinda Rajapaksa has
allocated funds for the rehabilitation work through the last budget in
response to public requests.
Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities
Minister Wimal Weerawansa visited the site on Friday. Rs 167 million has
been allocated to reconstruct this housing project. Construction is
being carried out by the State Engineering Corporation.
The minister addressing the gathering said that the Maligawatte
Housing Scheme buildings were in a poor state as they have not being
maintained and the people too were affected. Condominium management
cooperation is to be established and the responsibility of maintaining
and rehabilitating the housing scheme will be given to residents, the
minister said. Weerawansa urged the public to maintain scheme. |
