Jaffna to hold agri exhibition
The Jaffna Agriculture Department will hold a mega agricultural
exhibition at Tinnavelly, Jaffna District Agricultural Training Centre
from September 5 to 9. Daily a minister will declare open the
exhibition. The first day’s exhibition will be opened by Traditional
Industries and Small Enterprises Development Minister Douglas Devananda.
On the second day Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene will
open the exhibition. On the third and fourth day, Ministers Siripala de
Silva and Rishard Bathutheen will declare open the exhibition. The last
day’s event will be opened by Economic Development Minister Basil
Rajapaksa.
Cancer clinic at Karainagar
A cancer clinic has been opened at Karainagar government hospital.
The cancer expert Dr N Jeyakumaran will visit the clinic on the fourth
Wednesday of every month. The opening of this clinic is a boon to the
cancer patients in far off places like Moolai Chulipuram and Vaddukoddai.
It has also reduced the rush of cancer patients to Jaffna Teaching
Hospital.
Shop burgled
A shop at Krishnapuram, Kilinochchi has been burgled on September 2
night and several lakhs worth of telephone equipment and electrical
goods were stolen. The Kilinochchi police are investigating.
Businessman murdered
A native of Inuvil having a business establishment in Mannar has been
murdered in his shop at Arlkaddi Veli on September 1. The deceased is
Kanagaratnem Mahendran, 42, of Inuvil. The Mannar acting magistrate M M
Saburdeen visited the scene of murder and held the magisterial inquiry.
It was revealed at the inquiry that the murdere had entered into his
shop by the backside cutting off the tin sheet enclosing the shop. The
acting magistrate ordered for a post mortem examination. The
Viduthaltheevu police are investigating.
Mother, son injured in mishap
A mother and her son have been seriously injured in a motor cycle and
van accident at Atchuvely on September 1. They are admitted to the
Jaffna Teaching Hospital and later transferred to Colombo for advanced
treatment.
Fish auction centre opened
An auction centre built at a cost of Rs six million has been opened
at Mathagal by M Chandrakumar MP for the benefit of the fishermen of
Mathagal village. A long time request for an auction centre by the
people of Mathagal has been fulfilled. The next step is to build a jetty
at Mathagal for the fishing community, said Chandrakumar speaking at the
opening ceremony.
Auditor General’s sub-office for Mullaitivu
Auditor General H A S Samaraweera laid the foundation stone for a
sub-office of the Auditor General’s office at Mullaitivu on September 1.
The Economic Development Ministry voted Rs 5.5 million for the building.

Cottage industry exhibition at Hindu College
A cottage industry exhibition under the patronage of Economic
Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa has been organized by Traditional
Industries and Small Enterprises Development Minister Douglas Devananda
at Jaffna Hindu College on September 10 and 11. Five ministries are
jointly conducting this exhibition and 6,000 cottage industrialists are
expected to benefit by the exhibition.
The five ministries and the departments under them will exhibit new
machines and give technical know-how to the industrialists with low
capital. New investors will be guided to obtain capital for their
industry by the bank officials at the exhibition.
Money for incubators collected at meeting
At the meeting of Jaffna Lions Club held at Gnanams Hotel, Jaffna, on
August 31, Rs 750,000 was collected in 12 minutes to buy incubators for
children born underweight and with insufficient physical development.
The International Lions Club 306 B 1 District and Lions Clubs of 9,
10, 11 zones jointly welcomed the new District Governor Lion Priyantha
Fernando and Director International Lions Club, Lion Sunil Wattawela.
The gynacologist Jaffna Teaching Hospital Dr H Arunmoli said at least
fifty infants born in Jaffna Teaching Hospital are found to be
underweight due to malnutrition and insufficient physical development.
We need at least thirty incubators to nurse them.
After her speech the District Governor Priyantha Fernando gave his
donation for the incubator. In 12 minutes the list was full with Rs
755,000. The donation list was handed over to International Director
Sunil Wattawela. It was decided that by next month 30 incubators will be
sent to Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
It was said that the Jaffna Lions Club has already donated Rs 100,000
worth of incubators to Jaffna Teaching Hospital. |
