New volume on communication trends by Prof Ariyarathna

Ariyarathna Athugala presented a book authored by him titled
“Sannivedana Pravanatha” to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on
August 23, at Temple Trees. This book provides an
alternative academic access for under-graduates and scholars
to learn mass media and journalism as a subject. Prof
Ariyarathna Athugala who is also a Senior Lecturer of the
Mass Communication Department of the University of Kelaniya
has made an attempt through this book to highlight in
advance the future challenges in the spheres of mass media
in the globe. This book further provides insights into
Modern Communication Trends, Trends in Media Philosophy and
Media Theory, Media Literacy, Information Warfare and Cyber
Crimes etc. The book was published by Fast Publishing
(Private) Limited. |
Introduction of a medical insurance scheme titled ‘Induravi’
for media personnel was a highlight at the 5th anniversary
celebrations of the National Insurance Trust Fund (NITF)
held under the patronage of Prime Minister D M Jayaratne and
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa at the Grand Oriental Hotel,

Medical clinic for war hero families

The Navy Seva Vanitha Unit under the guidance of its President Neluka
Dissanayake conducted a medical clinic at SLNS Shilpa in Thalathuoya on
August 25 for relatives of the naval war heroes who were killed and
missing in action. Medical consultations and treatments were provided by
renowned general physicians and specialists in eye, gynaecology and
surgery from national and naval hospitals.
Over 200 relatives of the naval war heroes from the Kandy district
attended the clinic. Their welfare was looked into and dry ration packs
were presented to each along with breakfast, lunch and refreshments.
WHO experts present report:
NCDs increase related to food patterns
World Health Organization (WHO) expert Professor Yukio Yamori and
other specialists who arrived in Sri Lanka to conduct a special
experiment on the relationship between changes of food patterns in the
country and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), presented their report to
Health Ministry Additional Secretary Dr Palitha Mahipala on August 25.
Professor Yamori who said that there was a close relationship between
the changes of food patterns and NCDs disclosed that the main cause of
heart diseases was the failure of Sri Lankans to consume sufficient
quantities of sea fish despite the fact that Sri Lanka has a sea around
it which other countries in the world does not have. The professor
pointed out that every individual should exercise care in taking meals
and should never consume food containing a lot of fat and salt.
Dr Palitha Mahipala explained that the government had planned a
programme to make the people aware of their food patterns with the aim
of controlling non-communicable diseases.
Fined for dumping garbage on roads

Panadura Magistrate and Additional District Judge R.S.A. Dissanayaka
imposed a Rs 2,500 fine on each of the accused who pleaded guilty to the
charge of dumping garbage on public roads adjoining their house creating
environmental problems in Panadura, Kehelwatta area. The accused were
B.H. Lalith Kumara and Mohammed Nasim. Sub Inspector Ratnayake of
Panadura North Police prosecuted.
Northern fishermen to benefit
International Organization for Migration (IOM), Australia in
cooperation with the Australia’s Agency for International Development (AusAID)
and the Sri Lankan government authorities, will hand over an auction
centre and multi-purpose storage facility today to the Mathagal Rural
Fishermen Orgnization (MRFO) in the Sandilipay DS Division of the Jaffna
district.
Rs 5.9 million project is part of a 3-year IOM community
stabilization programme.
Sri Lankans in France donate medical items
The Association of Sri Lankaise En France, an organization of Sri
Lankans living in France, donated a consignment of medical items to the
Sri Lanka Navy on August 26.
The donation was ceremonially received by Navy Commander Vice Admiral
Somathilake Dissanayake at the SLNS Parakrama auditorium in Colombo.
The event co-ordinator Preethy Cooray said that they are immensely
indebted to the Navy for their great sacrifices during the humanitarian
operation.
The donation is worth over Rs 25 million which includes 78
remote-control adjustable hospital beds, 80 wooden bedside lockers and
five wheelchairs. |
