She says “The Overseas School of Colombo follows the International
Bachelorette (IB) system where it develops an individual’s mind to go
over and beyond. This project is to make a difference that can be
continued for a long period of time.”
The current project is a Child and Mother Care Clinic located in the
village Nithulemada, in Digana consisting of 200 families of low income
and multi ethnicity. The clinic was constructed by home owners residing
in the Victoria Golf Club in 2006. The building has the basic
infrastructure of a private dispensary, including a consultation room
and waiting area and well secure with a fence and garden. Unfortunately
this clinic has not been used since the completion of the construction
due to the lack of interest and utilization from the Nithulemada
villagers who are used to trudging to the adjoining village for medical
assistance.
Therefore, the best possible outcome would be to reopen this clinic
and have the basic services and sanitation for the villagers. Instead of
them travelling by foot to the surrounding clinics. Upandha along with
her family has decided o re-open the clinic.
On June 22, 2011, Upandha had a meeting with the Minister of Health
Central Province, Sunil Amarathunga and his staff to obtain guidance and
assistance to establish and open the clinic. The Minister who was very
satisfied with the facilities available at the site, requested the
ministry staff to make immediate arrangements to establish and commence
the clinic to the request made by Upandha and the date of commencement
was decided by the Minister to be August 1, 2011. |
