With an international harbour and an airport the formerly downtrodden
Hambantota district is now being transformed as one of the fastest
developing districts in the country.
With plans to host the Commonwealth Games in 2018, the area is now
being transformed as a major financial hub and a mini capital.
In a bid a harness the talents of rural entrepreneurs and groom them
to face the future challenges and demands in the area, the World Vision
International took the lead and conducted a vocational training
exhibition recently at the Lake Wind Hotel, Thissamaharama, exhibiting
the work of self-employed women from villages situated in the Hambantota
area, trained in workshops sponsored by the organization.
Area Development Programme Manager, World Vision Lanka, Lunugamvehera
area, Aruna Liyanage said that around 250 self employees from the
Lunugamvehera AGA Division participated in this event.

These entrepreneurs are engaged in manufacturing Batik, coir
products, bags and shoes and beauty culture and dressmaking.
Liyanage said World Vision International is dedicated to working with
children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice.
He said with the rapid development taking place in the area new
employment opportunities are being created which would increase the
buying power of the people.
"This would prompt them to look at better things in life and items
like Batik, beauty culture, coir products, and bags would be in demand.
"It is to cater to this new demand that we are organizing vocational
training programmes," he said.
Liyanage said that they also provide training and also try to obtain
the upcoming entrepreneurs credit faculties so they could enhance their
business and buy new machinery.
