Robber gang caught in the act

Gandara Police arrested a three member robber gang who burgled a
grinding mill opposite Gandara Maha Vidyalaya, Devinuwara in the early
hours of Monday while they were loading a consignment of food items
which they had robbed in to a vehicle. The suspects who are residents of
Tissamaharama are to be produced before the Matara Magistrate Courts.
New Anunayaka Thera to receive Act of Appointment

Ven Rajakeeya Panditha Gombaddala Nandarama Thera who has been
appointed as the new Anunayaka Thera of the Rohana Chapter of the
Shyamopali Maha Nikaya will receive his Act of Appointment from Prime
Minister D M Jayaratne at a ceremony at the Sri Rohana Uposathagara Raja
Maha Dharma Mandiraya, Matara on August 27 at 2.30 pm.
The Maha Sangha led by Ven Attudawe Sri Rahula Mahanayaka Thera of
the Sri Rohana Chapter will also be present on the occasion.
ANCL/SLFI lecture series
Sri Lanka Foundation Institute will organize a lecture series on
accountability of police officers at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute
on August 25 from 4.30 to 7 pm.
Speakers will be Additional Solicitor General Palitha Fernando PC,
IGP N K Illangakoon, Executive Director - Lawyers for Human Rights and
Development Kalyananda Thiranagama, Chief Consultant JMO Dr Ananda
Samarasekera. Moderator will be Asoka Serasinghe.
Leadership programme
‘Kent Ridge Junior’ a leadership programme for the children between
8-15 will be held at the SSC grounds on Sunday (28) from 8 am to 5 pm.
‘Iladchachanai’ Vizha
The ‘Varusabhiseka Iladchachanai’ of Arulmittusivasubramaniya Temple
at Slave Island commenced on Wednesday 24.8.2011 and will end on
2.9.2011 with special poojas to God Muruga on this day, the deity will
be taken around the streets on a chariot to the accompaniment of
Nathaswara music and devotional songs.
“Yosakoi dance”
The Embassy of Japan in collaboration with the University of
Peradeniya will present a Japanese “Yosakoi dance” on Thursday August
25, 2011 at the E O E Pereira Theatre, University of Peradeniya,
(Faculty of Engineering) at 6 pm followed by another performance in
Colombo on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the New Town Hall auditorium
(next to Mahaweli Centre) at 6 pm.
The “Yosakoi dance” will feature “Hokuto-gumi”, which is an elite
unit of Team Yamabiko, a Yosakoi dancing team which mainly performs at
Kobe, Japan. ‘Yosakoi’ (which means “Come at night”) is a unique style
of dance which originated in Japan in the city of Kochi in 1954, as a
modern rendition of Awa Odori, a traditional summer dance.
Help trace boy's parents

This 12-year-old boy found stranded in Kaduruwela by Kaduruwela
Police has been handed over to a children's home in Anuradhapura. Since
the boy is dumb Police have found it difficult to elicit information
from him to trace his parents or guardians.
Polonnaruwa Probation Officer U.B. Tennakoon has sought public
assistance to help trace the boy's parents or guardians so that he could
be handed over to them.
Yehansa needs hearing aid
Yehansa Chayangani of Saliya Ashokapura Yaya II is suffering from
hearing deficiency and she has been recommended to use digital hearing
aid on both ears.
The cost of the digital hearing device is Rs 196,000. Her mother P K
Samanthi says that she cant foot this bill due to her economic plight.
She requests philanthropists and the public to assist her daughter's
cause by sending whatever contribution possible to A/C number
219200120018439 of People's Bank at Thambaththegama.
Charitha Atak
Wilson Gunarathnes' latest creation 'Charitha Atak', the unique witty
comedy is now being staged at 'house full' theatres. 'Charitha Atak'
stage manager, Wijerathne Naullage said another performance of 'Charitha
Atak' would go on the boards at the Bishops College Auditorium on August
26, 2011 at 7 pm.

Book launch
The three books titled Amara Samara volume 6, 7 and 8 authored by
Veteran Administrative Officer, author, literary critic and poet Amara
Hewamadduma will be launched at a ceremony at the Sambuddhatva Jayanthi
Mandiraya, Thunmulla Junction Colombo on September 5 at 3 p.m.
Public talk
Prof. Oliver Abeynayake will deliver a public talk in English on 'Is
Buddha Omniscient?' at the meeting of the Servants of Buddha Society at
Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya on August 27 at 4.30 pm.
Lecture
The 32nd monthly lecture of the National Trust of Sri Lanka will be
held at the Institute of Construction Training and Development
"Savsiripaya", No. 123 Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7 today at 6.30 p.m.
The lecture is open to the public. The lecture "Gateway to Mutual
Heritage of Jaffna with special reference to the Grid City" will be
delivered by Archt Jayatissa Herath, Archt Deepal Wijethilaka and
Suganya Vinasithamby.
