The launch of an international photographic competition
themed Kandy Esala Perahera and a website “Kandy in Focus”
took place at Cinnamon Lake Side Hotel yesterday. The
competition is organized by the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy
and sponsored by Canon Singapore, Metropolitan, Sri Lanka
Tourism Promotion Bureau, SriLankan Airlines and Ceylon
Sights. The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL)
is the print media sponsor. Here, Managing Director of

Harmony and Rhythm at Art Gallery
The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo is organizing an Exhibition of
Paintings by Ruchi Goyal Kaura, Deepa Seth Bhando, Sonika Agarwal and
Sandhya Singh at National Art Gallery (West Wing) 106, Ananda
Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7 today at 6 pm. Ouida Keuneman (eminent
artist) will be inaugurating the exhibition.
Four facets of nature in the form of colours, sounds, designs and
human situations will be featured in the canvases in this exhibition of
four women artists.
The exhibition will remain open from July 20 to 24 between 11 am and
7 pm.
Roads repaired

The road network around the Sri Vishnu Devale in Devinuwara has been
carpeted and prepared with platforms at a cost of Rs 70 million.
Funds had been received on the recommendation of President Mahinda
Rajapaksa on a request by Devinuwara Basnayake Nilame Dishan
Wickremaratne Gunasekera.
The money was also allocated to carry out repairs to the roof of the
old Devale and to construct a wall.
Help them
Tharul Methmina Peiris who is one year and eight months old is
diagnosed with biliary atresia and cirrhosis of liver from his birth.
According to doctors, this is a rare disease where one out of 100,000
children become victim.
He requires a liver transplant to save his life. Tharul’s mother is
donating a part of her liver. Paediatric consultant Dr Dilrukshi Ruberu
and Paediatric surgeon Dr Sanjaya Abeygunasekera recommended him to be
transferred to Global Hospitals and Health City in Chennai, India for
the liver transplant. The cost to take him to India and treatment has
been estimated to be around Rs 8 million which is difficult for the
parents. They seek contributions from the public to save their son’s
life.

Tharuka Deshan (08) of Ratnagiri Ihala Naragala, Govinna in
Bulathsinhala electorate is suffering from Neurological disabilities
since his birth. His father P.D. Pubuda Ratnasekara requests for help.

Tharuka is mentally, audio and visually handicapped and is completely
paralyzed below his hip.
He is unable to talk, walk identify anybody and even sleep. Six major
operations have already been carried out in his throat and neck. Doctors
at the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, Colombo are expected to
perform seven more operations.
Tharuka solely depends on liquids.
His father works in the Education Department as a minor employee and
his wife is unemployed. They appeal to the public to send financial
contributions to A/c No.161200190021296 at People’s Bank, Bulathsinhala.
Newly wed dies of burn injuries

A newly married woman who tried to light the gas – cooker at her home
caught fire and succumbed to her injuries at the National Hospital,
Colombo last week.
The victim was Nadeeka Nissansala (21) of Wilimbula, Weliweriya.
The woman’s husband who tried to rescue her was admitted to the
Gampaha hospital with severe burn injuries.
Weliweriya Police are conducting further investigations.
Animal sacrifices continue
In spite of appeals to desist from slaughtering animals at Hindu
kovils the slaughter of goats at Kovils was carried out regardless.
The appeals were made by Hindu organizations and the Head of Nallur
Hindu Atheenam. Last week, two kovils at Annaikottai and Alaveddy
witnessed the brutal slaughter of goats under the name of sacrifice.
Last month, more than a 1,000 he-goats were slaughtered at the
Vyravar temple at Kavanawatte in Keerimalai. The Hindu organizations in
Jaffna have launched a non-violent campaign to put a stop to this
barbaric practice.
CEB employee electrocuted
An employee of the Electricity Board was electrocuted while he was
attending to repairs of an street lamp.
He was suddenly thrown off the electric post and fell down on a
flower pot.
He succumbed to electric shock after admission to Chavakachcheri
hospital.
Song of peace
The cultural pageant “Song of Peace – 6” will stage on September 10
at Christ church, Galle Face with the sponsorship of State and religious
organizations and with the cooperation of the President’s Office.
The aim of the cultural pageant is to ensure close cooperation among
various religious and ethnic groups in the island.
The event will be held under the patronage of Sabaragamuwa University
Chancellor Professor Kamburugamuwe Vajira Thera, Father Sarath
Hettiarachchi, Ven Galagama Dhamma Rama Thera, Priest Seyyad Hussan
Maulana of the Dawatagaha Muslim Jumma Mosque and Father Kurukkal Babu
Sharma.
SAARC conference on diminishing cultures
A Regional Conference on Diminishing Cultures will be held from today
to July 21 at Queen’s Hotel, Kandy. Over 38 experts from Bangladesh,
Bhutan, India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka will participate. The
conference will be inaugurated by Central Province Governor Tikiri
Kobbekaduwa.
The conference will identify key issues and research theme cultures
that merit independent and in-depth research. It will discuss the
country situation related to diminishing cultures in SAARC Member States
and recognize research approaches and methodologies for further
research. On the basis of the recommendations of the Conference, the
SAARC Cultural Centre will sponsor a series of research projects within
the next year. The outcome of these projects will be shared with all
concerned in the form of research publication. |
