* Need for rural women to be aware

Women on many occasions in their lives suffer due to the ignorance of the law and their rights, said Technology and Research Deputy Minister Fizer Mustapha.

He said so at the Annual Women’s Conference held at the Janaka Hall at Alawathugoda in Kandy recently. He said that especially rural women need to be aware of their rights. He said that plans had been finalized to conduct awareness programmes for women to provide them an understanding of their rights.

He said that reports received from all parts of the country spoke of the hardships experienced by women who continuously suffer from domestic violence. Professor Kamala Liyanage of the Peradeniya University delivered a lecture on women’s right on the occasion.

A number of parliamentarians and politicians also participated.
