With the construction industry being the driver of infrastructure reconstruction and development, the capacity development of regional construction industries is an essential prerequisite to ensure that the benefits of reconstruction in the conflict affected regions are delivered by the respective communities, he said at a press conference in Colombo on last week.

The CCI has invited over a hundred international and local experts to the three day international conference on ‘Building resilience’ from July 19 to 21 at Heritance Kandalama in Dambulla for this purpose. The invited expertise include academics, practitioners, professionals and policy makers concerned with interdisciplinary approaches to disaster risk reduction and the development of sustainable communities and cities.

Salford University UK Prof Dilanthi Amaratunga who will be the conference Chairperson said Sri Lanka has the ideal backdrop to hold this conference after 30 years of conflict, the tsunami disaster and the recent floods.

The outcome of the conference will be used to support the UN World Disaster Reduction Campaign “Making cities resilient” which addresses issues of local governance and urban risks. There will be five key note addresses by leading industrialists and academics .

The conference is organized by the Centre For Disaster Resilience, the School of the Built Environment, the University of Salford UK and the RMIT University, Australia in association with UNDP Sri Lanka and four other relevant institutions. External Affairs Minister Professor G L Peiris will be the chief guest.
