CCI conference to initiate constructor capacity development
programme

The Chamber of Construction Industry (CCI) will initiate a
constructor capacity development programme in the North and the East in
the near future. Chamber CEO Daksitha Talgodapitiya said that bringing
construction industry to focus and get the participation of the industry
is a huge challenge but very important in the post conflict environment
in the country . Therefore knowledge sharing and experience from
different backgrounds is essential.

With the construction industry being the driver of infrastructure
reconstruction and development, the capacity development of regional
construction industries is an essential prerequisite to ensure that the
benefits of reconstruction in the conflict affected regions are
delivered by the respective communities, he said at a press conference
in Colombo on last week.
The CCI has invited over a hundred international and local experts to
the three day international conference on ‘Building resilience’ from
July 19 to 21 at Heritance Kandalama in Dambulla for this purpose. The
invited expertise include academics, practitioners, professionals and
policy makers concerned with interdisciplinary approaches to disaster
risk reduction and the development of sustainable communities and
cities.
Salford University UK Prof Dilanthi Amaratunga who will be the
conference Chairperson said Sri Lanka has the ideal backdrop to hold
this conference after 30 years of conflict, the tsunami disaster and the
recent floods.
The outcome of the conference will be used to support the UN World
Disaster Reduction Campaign “Making cities resilient” which addresses
issues of local governance and urban risks. There will be five key note
addresses by leading industrialists and academics .
The conference is organized by the Centre For Disaster Resilience,
the School of the Built Environment, the University of Salford UK and
the RMIT University, Australia in association with UNDP Sri Lanka and
four other relevant institutions. External Affairs Minister Professor G
L Peiris will be the chief guest. |
