Mosquito time bombs in nearly 75 pc schools

Health Ministry investigations have revealed that about 75 percent of schools islandwide contain places with mosquito larvae and mosquito breeding places. Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena observing this fact, made a special request from parents to actively support shramadana campaigns to clean school premises to save children from dengue.

He also requested to arrange shramadana campaigns

weekly in schools to destroy all mosquito breeding places. Roof gutters, tree holes, certain ornamental plants, tins and barrels, meal boxes, shopping bags, slabs in half complete constructions and cement water tanks were identified as frequent mosquito breeding places in schools. The Minister was participating during a mosquito control programme organized by the Ministry jointly with Colombo Municipal Council on Saturday in Jawatta. House to house inspections, spraying of Malathion liquid and distribution of handouts were conducted on this day.
